about

"Growing Pains" was written at the tail end of 2016 as a sort of reflective piece of the chaos that ensued that year. I originally wrote a gospel song, centered on the second chord, with organs, big vocals, stomps and claps, etc. However, as the song progressed, and the melody became more pronounced and poppy, I had an idea of turning it into a country-pop/Europop piece, with some of the gospel elements like the stomps and claps. When the song was written and demoed, I had every intention of giving it away to a couple of local musicians. However, when I was working on "Photographs," I stumbled upon it, resang the vocals, and decided to close out the album with it due to its strong pop sound, optimism and roots in soul and country.

lyrics

Why don't we take some time to find us
We are young and full of life
Why don't we leave tonight?
It's all unknown until it's known
But we are forced to keep it going
Why don't we take the dive

We don't know what's on the ocean floor
Unless we go and discover

Well, I walk down through the fire-hot dirt
And I feel the pain, I ain't scared of hurt
Sometimes hurt is what you need to grow up
And losing ain't that all bad
In the moment it feels like that's all you had
But in the end at least you'll say you know

Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...

Why don't we know what we want
Take the time to learn a different song
Why are we bound by their rules
It's never known until it's known
And now is a perfect time to go
We can do what we want to do

We don't know what's on the ocean floor
Unless we go and discover

Well, I walk down through the fire-hot dirt
And I feel the pain, I ain't scared of hurt
Sometimes hurt is what you need to grow up
And losing ain't that all bad
In the moment it feels like that's all you had
But in the end at least you'll say you know

Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...

I don't want to stay in this place too long
This place too long for you
I don't want to say I did it wrong
I did it wrong for you
It's my life and I want to be what I want to be
And what I want is to be me

Well, I walk down through the fire-hot dirt
And I feel the pain, I ain't scared of hurt
Sometimes hurt is what you need to grow up
And losing ain't that all bad
In the moment it feels like that's all you had
But in the end at least you'll say you know

Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
Now you'll know...
